Karnataka, recognised as a major gaming hub in India, is aiming to amend its iGaming regulation to curb the increasing illegal operators in the Indian state. The Government plans to implement ‘Karnataka Online Gaming and Betting Regulatory Authority’ to oversee and enforce the amended Karnataka Police Act.
The revised Act will overhaul its framework to strengthen regulation and improve its markets reputation. Licensed operators will be required to report suspicious activity within 48 hours and must maintain records of all transactions for 5 years.
The regulation will roll-out stringent penalties for operators involved in illegal activities. Illegal operators face serious consequences involving up to three years of imprisonment. Games of chance will be banned; however, the bill will regulate games of skill and issue licences to operators providing skill-based gaming platforms. The Indian skill-based gaming market is a significant market driver, valued at $4 billion and contributes $1.44 billion in taxes per year.
